A Star is Born

This story is not an original. It is the third remake of the 1937 famous romantic drama, but with a modern cast that includes the likes of Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga making it a must watch, especially for the newer generation. The storytelling is amazing and with an eye to detail reflected each shot, you get to see a beautiful movie play out. The story revolves around a young songwriter/singer, Ally, who falls hard for a country musician known for drinking a lot. The budding romance and the chemistry between the actors is spellbinding. What’s more, you get to hear some of the best music. Its song Shallow won Academy Award for Best Original Award and managed to top the music charts globally.

Amadeus

Who doesn’t know the maestro Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart? He made history with his music and touched the hearts of generations of people and continues to do so which is a why we just had to include him on our list. The movie is an adaptation of a stage play by Peter Shaffer and highlights the rivalry between Mozart and Antonio Salieri, an Italian composer. Watching two great music personalities on the screen is a treat to watch and this movie tries to give you just that. The film has won a whopping eight Academy Awards which is a testament to its brilliance so make sure you give it a watch.

The Blues Brothers

If you’re looking for a good laugh this is it. An SNL sketch about Jake and Ellwood Blues, played by the comedians John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, garnered much success and went on to become a full-length feature. It shows two troublemakers determined to raise money for the orphanage they grew up in to ensure it isn’t foreclosed. This is a fictional story with little resemblance to the life of famous musicians, but it makes for a captivating tale that’ll make you laugh. What’s more, you get to see the industry’s big wigs like Cab Calloway, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan and Ray Charles in guest appearances.

8 Mile

Mirroring the life of Eminem, this movie revolves around the story of a white rapper from Michigan played of course by Eminem. This best seller won the Academy Award for Best Original Song which means you not only get a good story to follow but equally great music to enjoy. As you learn more about the controversial musician, in a world dominated by black rappers, and his struggles you can’t help but find yourself connecting to them and rooting for them. This fictional piece hits close to reality and tells you a compelling tale of the world of glamor and those who inhabit it.

Straight Outta Compton

Speaking of Rappers, we can’t not talk about Straight Outta Compton. O’Shea Jackson Jr. plays the role of his father Ice Cube and documents the early years of NWA, West Coast Gangsta rap pioneers. It features many classic cuts of the group. The film is a must watch and if you’ve liked Dr. Dre’s album Compton, be sure to give this film a watch, after all that’s what inspired Dre’s music!
